History of the Oklahoma State Flag:  In 1911 the Oklahoma State Legislature approved the first official flag of Oklahoma. This original flag was simple in design with a blue star centered on a field of red. Centered in the blue star was "46" because Oklahoma was the 46th state to join the Union in 1907. In 1917, during the Russian Revolution, people began to dislike the flag because it was too similar to the Russian flag and too closely related to communism. In 1924 the Daughters of the American Revolution sponsored a contest for residents to submit new flag designs. Louise Fluke, an artist educated at Columbia University and the Chicago Art Institute, won the contest and her design remains as the official state flag. Only one change was made in 1941; the state legislature voted to add "Oklahoma" embroidered in white across the bottom. Description of the Oklahoma State Flag:  Louise Fluke's design of the Oklahoma state flag is themed around the unification and solidarity between Native American and European Americans in Oklahoma. Centered on the flag is the Osage warrior's shield, made from buffalo hide fringed with seven eagle feathers on the bottom half. Crossing the warrior's shield are the calumet (a peace pipe) and an olive branch. There are six crosses on the shield to represent high ideals. The Osage warrior shield and "Oklahoma" are featured upon a field of blue. Flags flown by the Choctaw Nation during the Civil War used this same blue.

Flagnations Trivia for Oklahoma:  The state of Oklahoma decided to change its original state flag, which was flown from 1911 - 1925, because of the Russian Revolution. The original Oklahoma flag was predominantly red and many Americans felt that red flags were sympathetic to communism. A new flag was approved in 1925. See above for more details!
