History of the North Carolina State Flag:  The first state flag of North Carolina was designed in 1861. It was created to represent the state upon secession from the Union. This original flag was carried by North Carolina Regiments during the Civil War. After the war ended and North Carolina rejoined the Union, the flag was redesigned. The colors and dates were changed to represent a new era for North Carolina. The dates on the original flag represented when North Carolina declared independence from Great Britain (the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence) and when North Carolina seceded from the U.S. The second date on the flag was changed to the date of the Halifax Resolve, which was North Carolina's official recommendation made to other state delegates at the Continental Congress in Philadelphia in 1776. Description of the North Carolina State Flag:  The North Carolina flag consists of two horizontal bands of red and white on the fly, with a vertical blue band on the hoist. Within the blue band, a white star is centered with the letters "N" and "C" on either side. Above this design is a semi-circle gold banner that reads "May 20th 1775," which is the date of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence. Below the design is another semi-circle gold banner that reads "April 12th 1776," which is the date of the Halifax Resolve.

Flagnations Trivia for North Carolina:  The first date on North Carolina's flag is May 20th, 1775. This is the date of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence. This document was North Carolina's official declaration of independence from Great Britain. There is a bit of controversy surrounding this document because there are a few phrases that are similar to those used by Thomas Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence. Some believe that Jefferson plagiarized from North Carolina's document and others believe the North Carolina didn't actually create this document in 1775. The general consensus among historians is that the similarities are present because these phrases were used commonly in the time period in other writings. Therefore, the Mecklenburg Declaration is considered legitimate and Jefferson is not labeled a plagiarizer.
