History of the PA State Flag:  The Pennsylvania state flag was first authorized by the General Assembly in 1799. The original flag only differs from today's flag in one small way. In 1907, the General Assembly voted to change the blue to match that of the United States flag. Significance of the Pennsylvania Coat of Arms:  The Pennsylvania state flag features the state coat of arms. The state coat of arms is actually the coat of arms of William Penn, father of Pennsylvania. Description of the Pennsylvania State Flag:  The Pennsylvania flag features the state coat of arms centered in a field of blue. The coast of arms features a shield containing the following images: a large ship representing the commerce that Pennsylvania brings to the world, a plow representing the state's natural resources, and three sheaves of wheat representing the Pennsylvania's wealth of thought and action. Above the shield is an eagle, representing the state's allegience to the United States. Two horses flank the shield and a ribbon below contains the state motto: "Virture, Liberty, and Independence."

Flagnations Trivia for Pennsylvania:  During the Civil War, Pennsylvania regiments carried flags that were similar to the United States flag, but the canton contained the Pennsylvania coat of arms instead of stars. This was the only time that Pennsylvania's state flag was altered.

Bonus Flagnations Trivia for Pennsylvania:  William Penn, the father of Pennsylvania, was born in England to a political and wealthy family. When Penn was young, he converted to Quakerism. This conversion resulted in numerous arrests for young Penn. He was even temporarily disowned by his father. However, in 1681, the King granted Penn the land of Pennsylvania and Delaware to satisfy a debt owed his father, the elder William Penn. Originally, the King Charles II intended for Delaware to be a part of Pennsylvania. When Penn arrived in the colonies, Delaware did not want to be associated with Penn's Quakerism and immediately filed a petition to create their own province.
