Description of the Oregon State Flag: The Oregon state flag was adopted in 1925 and has never undergone any changes. The front of the Oregon state flag is a field of blue the contains the state seal with "State of Oregon" embroidered atop and "1859" (the year Oregon joined the United States) embroidered below. The state seal is a heart-shaped shield with an eagle for the crest, to represent loyalty to the United States. The shield is surrounded by 33 stars, the number of states in the Union in 1859. Within the shield are a number of images: mountains and forests to represent the natural resources of the state; a Conestoga wagon to represent the early Oregon settlers; a sun setting over the Pacific Ocean with two ships, a British ship leaving and an United States ship arriving, to represent trade; and a pickax and a sheaf of wheat represent the early industry of the state, agriculture and mining. Embroidered on the reverse side of the Oregon state flag is a golden beaver, the state animal.
