The anchor in the middle of the current state flag has been the center of the Rhode Island flag since 1644, when the Charter for the Providence Plantations was approved by the British government.

A golden anchor is surrounded by 13 stars to represent the original 13 colonies and that Rhode Island was the 13th state accepted into the Union. A blue ribbon below the anchor reads "Hope," which is the state motto.
