Tennessee State Flag

History of the Tennessee State Flag:  From 1897-1905, Tennessee's state flag consisted of three slanted bands of red, white, and blue. Each band represented a a geographical section of the state--East Tennessee, Middle Tennessee, and West Tennessee. The blue band held the state motto, "The Volunteer State." The white band held "16," to represent Tennessee becoming the 16th state in 1796. In 1905, Tennessee adopted a new flag, designed by Colonel LeRoy Reeves of the Tennessee National Guard. This is Tennessee's current flag. Description of the Tennessee State Flag:  Tennessee's state flag features a field of crimson with a blue circle in the center and a stripe of blue on the fly. The blue circle in the center represents the unity of the state and holds three white stars to represent the three geographical sections of the state--East, Middle, and West Tennessee. When explaining the placement of the stars, Colonel Reeves stated that "the highest star shall by the one nearest the upper corner of the flag." This explanation is somewhat ambiguous and, unfortunately, the flag is often printed upside down.
