Utah State Flag

History of the Utah State Flag:  The state's first flag was designed by the Daughters of the Revolution (DAR) in 1903. From 1903 to 1913, the DAR design was the official state flag. The DAR design looked the same as the current flag, however, it did not have the gold ring and all of the stitching was white. In 1912, a new flag was ordered to be presented to the battleship USS Utah, but that flag arrived different than the original flag. The new flag was displayed at the state capital before presented to the battleship making the new, full-color flag the new standard. Description of the Utah State Flag:  The Utah state flag is a field of navy blue with the Utah state seal and "1896" encircled by a gold ring. The state seal features a bald eagle above a shield, surrounded by two U.S. flags. The shield holds the word "Industry," a beehive surrounded by sego lilies, and "Utah 1847." The beehive and state motto "Industry" represent the ideas of progress and hard work, while the sego lilies represent peace. 1847 is the year that the first settlers arrived in Utah; 1896 is the year Utah became a state.

Flagnations Trivia for Utah:  In 2011, the Utah State Legislature adopted a Concurrent Resolution to requiring flag makers to fix a mistake that had been found on all  Utah state flags for 89 years. In 1922, a flag maker stitched the year 1847 directly above 1896, not inside the shield. That flag was then mistakenly used as a model until 2011.
