Washington State Flag

History of The Washington State Flag:  Although Washington became a state in 1889, they had no official state flag for many years. In 1914, the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) realized that they had no state flag for Washington and requested one. The DAR put together a committee chaired by the wife of a Supreme Court Justice, Mrs. SJ Chadwick. In April, 1916 the flag was used to represent the state of Washington and continued to be used as such. However, the flag design was not officially approved by the State Legislature until 1923. Description of The Washington State Flag:  The flag is dark green with the state seal in the center. The dark green represents Washington's motto as the Evergreen State. The state seal is simply a picture of President George Washington encircled with the words "The Seal of the State of Washington 1889."
